Lisbon, Portugal, 1981. Lives and works in Lisbon and Olho de Boi.
His research and artistic practice focus on Time. He is interested in the perception (not representation) of Time through the manipulation of its suspension, distension, and compression. Time as a variable that can be manipulated, like a parameter of an equation. In his work, each series is an open-ended project, a line in constant dialogue with the other series. The concepts and principles present in Rui Soares Costa’s work are parsimony, minimalism, absence, seminality, nature, and materiality. His work often occurs in co-creation with the surrounding context.
He works closely with contemporary music, and his projects are accompanied by original soundtracks. He has established a close collaboration with the musician and multimedia artist André Gonçalves.
His work is part of private and institutional collections in Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, India, Portugal, and Switzerland, such as the Museo de Arte Moderno y Contemporáneo de Santander y Cantabria (Spain), the National Library of Portugal Collection (Portugal), the Berardo Collection (Portugal), the Manuel de Brito Collection (Portugal), the José Costa Rodrigues Collection (Portugal), the Rita Talhas and Gonçalo Lima Collection (Portugal), the Colección Mouro Producciones (Spain), and the Colección Art Fairs (Spain).
