For Drawing Room Lisboa, we propose two artists who embrace drawing both in their artistic practice and in their theoretical thinking. The proposals by Rui Horta Pereira and Rui Soares Costa presented here expand drawing beyond its formal canons, resorting to less conventional processes and tools within this discipline.
“Time as matter and place,” intersecting with monotype methods, the works presented are recent productions and reflect many of the questions present throughout the trajectory of both artists.
On the one hand, Rui Horta Pereira presents a group of drawings made with the sun, in a clear and deliberate appropriation of natural resources, as well as an ethical awareness of his own body of work that continuously (re)invents itself. On the other hand, there are drawings made with fire which, in an apparent paradox, fleetingly register time—one of the central topics of investigation for Rui Soares Costa—using fire as a tool that imprints gesture onto the wood while simultaneously transforming it.
