Integrated into the 8th edition of Bairro das Artes, “Lifeline Series” presents Rui Soares Costa’s most recent drawings as if reproducing the movement of a seismograph that, instead of recording the tremors of the earth, represents the biorhythmic variations of a body, his own. Hundreds of lines, each symbolizing a particular moment in life, tend to draw close to one another, yet never actually touch, which reinforces, when we observe the work as a whole, the vibratory perception of the drawing.

There are countless connections between Drawing and Philosophy, grounded above all in this intention to reveal essence, so present in “Lifeline Series” and in the way Rui Soares Costa approaches the artistic process and attempts to understand the world, man, and humanity. The line, the simplest form of gesture, drawn with a pen of almost imperceptible expression; the physiological behavior suggested by the line; that tension between body and cognition; the underlying thought within these almost straight lines, which by definition seek the shortest path; the sense of time perceived to have existed during the creation of this drawing, all of these elements also lead us toward further reflections.
